We were honored to be commissioned to create custom gift bags for the speakers at the 4th Wellness Retreat, organized by Phoenix Landing. Phoenix Landing is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting parrots and the families who care for them. Held in May 2018 in North Carolina, this bi-annual, two-day event featured an exceptional lineup of speakers, ranging from world-renowned avian veterinarians to respected international scientists. The retreat offered diverse seminar tracks, covering everything from toy making and behavior training to highly technical subjects for vet students and bird enthusiasts alike. We learned so much and were truly grateful to be a part of it.
This project gave us a wonderful opportunity to research and closely study the specific birds favored by the speakers. We referenced book illustrations, provided photos, and internet images, aiming to capture each bird's unique personality in our designs. The most challenging aspect was replicating the exact shades of the birds' plumage. Capturing the precise color—and the countless subtle gradients within feathers—is no easy task!
Here is the first collection of our bird embroidery. We hope you love them.
To help us achieve even greater accuracy in the future, we would love to build a reference collection of real feathers. If you have any naturally dropped feathers to spare, please consider mailing them to us along with a note specifying the bird species. Thank you so much for your support!
